A translator's website that speaks Icelandic.

irisarnadottir.is is the website of Íris Árnadóttir, an Icelandic ⇄ English translator in Reykjavík. I planned, designed and built it, and wrote the code for every page: two languages on every page, a page for each service, a quote form for every kind of job, and a marketing desk to keep it found.

Made to be shared

Every page has its own picture.

Each page got a share image built from its own content: her portrait and the Icelandic words on her home page, the books and series she has translated, her film stills, and the companies she has worked with.

The brief

Found in two markets, trusted in both.

Íris translates, subtitles and proofreads between Icelandic and English. Her subtitles have streamed on HBO Max, Netflix and Viaplay, and her clients sit in Iceland, the United States and Europe.

So the website had to do the same thing she does: read naturally in both languages, show the craft rather than describe it, and make asking for a price easy, whether the visitor is a production company abroad or a shop in Reykjavík.

  • Built onSquarespace, with custom code blocks and site-wide code injection

What was built

Six parts, one website.

Every page is custom code inside Squarespace, written in one design system so the site reads as one piece of work.

01

Bilingual by design

One flag switch in the header changes every page between English and Icelandic, and remembers the choice.

  • Both languages in the page for search
  • Header, pages and footer switch together
  • Icelandic typography done properly
02

Service pages that show the craft

Each service proves itself on the page instead of just describing itself.

  • A subtitle player with real lines
  • A proofreading sheet that corrects itself
  • The same listing, localized for each market
03

A quote form for every job

Every service page has its own form asking the questions that job needs, plus a site-wide quote pop-up.

  • Subtitling asks for runtime and episodes
  • Localization asks for the target market
  • Every request lands in her inbox
04

One price, four currencies

Her starting rate moves through króna, euro, pound and dollar, so every visitor sees their own money.

  • 7,500 kr. · €55 · £45 · $60 an hour
  • A firm quote before any work starts
05

Header, footer, search and sharing

The parts that run on every page, built once.

  • Mega menu header with the language flags
  • Footer with live London, Reykjavík and New York clocks
  • Search wording and share images for each page
06

A marketing desk

A private page that keeps the website working after launch.

  • 52 weeks of posts and stories, ready to download
  • All website wording in Google Docs
  • Monthly website performance

The pages

See it live.

Every picture opens the real page on irisarnadottir.is, in a new tab.

How it was made

Wording first, then everything else.

The same order I follow on every website.

  1. The words

Every line written in English and Icelandic before any design, and kept in Google Docs she can edit.

  2. The look

Forest green, gold and cream, with Fraunces and Figtree: calm, Icelandic and easy to read in both languages.

  3. The build

Page by page in Squarespace, each one checked on desktop and phone in both languages before it went live.

  4. The launch

Search wording, share images, quote forms tested end to end, and a year of social posts ready to go.
